Innovation Case Study - Due Term 1 Week 7- March 21st

Structure of the innovation case study
The following will help guide the development of your case study:
  1. Describe the innovation including reference to the needs, function and aesthetics of the design.
  2. Find out about the historical development and design processes employed leading to the innovation.
  3. By describing any adaptation or development of ideas employed during the development of the innovation, determine the extent of creativity employed by the innovator or designer.
  4. The following factors often impact on the success of innovations: marketing strategies, timing, political, economic, cultural and legal factors. Identify those that have impacted on your innovation's success. Give simple explanations to justify your choices. (refer to chapter 17 of text)

Animated Logo

Now that you have completed your graphic logo from your first assessment task, you are required to make an animated version of it.
You are required to use the Adobe Flash software to create the final animation of the logo. Below is and example of a completed animated logo and the process you should follow to complete the task.

  1. Outline in dot points each step of your animated sequence for your animation.
  2. Summarise the points to between 6 - 10 points, grouping points that could be explained in one drawing.
  3. Using a storyboard layout sheet, create a storyboard that shows the key stages of your animation. Your illustrations should be clear and well drawn to present to your client for consideration and for the animator to work from to create the animation. (This will be you in this case, but as a storyboard artist this may not always be the case).
  4. Make sure you fill in the sections for the visual and audio below your drawings. These sections should explain to the animator and client what will be happening visually in the animation for example spins or transitions, and also what audio will be happening at the time such as voice over (what is being said by a narrator or voice over artist), sound effects or music.
  5. When you have completed your storyboard it should be shown to your client or teacher for evaluation ready to get the go ahead to start animating.
  6. You should now use the tools and animation techniques that you have learnt in Adobe Flash to create your final animation.
  7. When you have completed your animation in Flash, export your animation as a quicktime movie.
  8. Now create your audio, music and sound effects using the Garageband software and save your audio files in the appropriate format.
  9. Import your quicktime movie animation and your audio files into iMovie and complete your final editing of your animation, adding in any transitions or visual effects that you have outlined in your storyboard.
  10. Save and export your final animation and submit for assessment.

What is Multimedia Presentation

You are to create on your iPad either a keynote presentation using the keynote app or an iBook using the creative book builder app. You may not have used either of these apps before so experiment with them to learn how to use them. Spend approx 15 minutes doing this, there is a help button under tools menu in keynote.

The presentation should be titled "What is Multimedia?" You are to research the Internet using Safari on your iPad. Find out the following information about multimedia.

  1. Define the term multimedia.
  2. What are the different digital media or data types used in multimedia products.
  3. What are the main purposes of multimedia products.
  4. Give some examples of multimedia products used for each of these purposes.
  5. List some of the ways multimedia products can be distributed eg. On a CD.
  6. Name the different file types for each of the digital media types eg. Text is the digital media type and a .doc is a file type for text. These could be shown in a table.
  7. Include examples of each of the digital media types in your presentation.

Designers in Industry Project (Due 2/8/2013)

You are to complete a report on a designer who is in the same field of design as your Major Design Project (MDP).

  1. Describe each of the steps involved in the design process from initial idea (for example, contact with the client, idea inspiration, identification of market opportunity) to the final product explaining how each step influences the next stage in the process.
  2. In your MDP you must provide evidence of creativity, ensuring that your project stands out from the others. Outline the creative and innovative design practices used by your designer and outline how you might emulate these to help you be creative with your design.
  3. Compare your design process to the designer above. Identify good practices that you can emulate in your design project. Consider the different tools, techniques materials and resources available. Explain how these may influence the outcome of the final product and your design process.
  4. Identify any areas of the design process where the designer works collaboratively with others and explain what collaboration takes place and why collaboration is vital to the design process.
  5. Consider your design project and compare the processes you followed and those that would be used in a comparable commercial industrial setting.
  6. Outline the safe work principles that your chosen designer follows within their work place and which you should abide by when developing your MDP
  7. Explain how you implemented safe work practices when selecting materials and techniques in the design and production of your MDP.
